Bay boats and inshore fishing boats
Inshore water in Florida is skinny. The grass flats of Tampa Bay, the Indian River Lagoon near New Smyrna Beach and the backcountry around the Keys all reward a boat that floats shallow, runs quietly and gives you room to cast. A bay boat or smaller center console is built for that: a low draft, a wide casting deck and a livewell, usually with a single outboard. The boats below include Sea Hunt BX bay boats and smaller Ultras in the 21- to 25-foot range, plus Scout XSS, XSF and Sportfish models. Start with the length and power you want, then adjust the filters. Our team can talk through draft, ride in a chop and how you'll trailer it.

Questions bay anglers ask.
Still deciding? Tell us where you fish and how shallow you run.
What is a bay boat?
A bay boat is a shallow-draft fishing boat designed for protected water such as bays, lagoons, flats and backcountry creeks. Most have a wide, open casting deck, a livewell and a single outboard, and they trailer easily. They are not built for rough open water, so choose one for the water you fish most often.
Is a bay boat or a center console better for inshore fishing?
A bay boat usually drafts less and gives you a flatter casting deck, which suits flats and skinny water. A center console has a deeper hull and a smoother ride in a chop, which helps if your trips include open bays or a short run outside. If you fish both, a smaller Ultra or Scout XSF can cover each.
How shallow a boat do I need for Florida flats?
It depends on your tides and your spots. A lower draft opens more water, but shallow hulls often give up some ride quality in a chop. Look up the listed draft for each model, then compare it with the shallowest places you fish at low tide. Tell our team those spots and we'll suggest boats that fit.
Can I run a bay boat in the Gulf or the Atlantic?
On calm days close to the coast, many bay boats can. They are built for protected water, though, and the weather and sea state decide what is safe. For regular trips outside the inlets, a deeper-hull center console is the better fit. Check the forecast every time, and ask us which models suit your inlet.
Do I need a trolling motor or a Power-Pole for inshore fishing?
Neither is required, but many inshore anglers add one. A bow-mount trolling motor holds a quiet line along a shoreline, and a shallow-water anchor keeps you on a spot without spooking fish. Ask our team about rigging options at your store.
